On May 19, The University of Havana, Cuba, hosted a financial security lesson and the qualifying round of the 3rd International Financial Security Olympiad for 70 undergraduates from the University of Havana, José Antonio Echeverría Higher Polytechnic Institute, and Higher Institute of International Relations Raúl Roa García.

Held on the margins of the Russo-Cuban Intergovernmental Trade, Economics, Science, and Technology Cooperation Commission session, the lesson and Olympiad qualifiers, putting the limelight on financial security as a new area of active scientific and educational cooperation between Cuba and Russia, were organized by the Russian Peoples’ Friendship University as part of its role in the International AML/CFT Network Institute (INI), and the International Training and Methodology Center for Financial Monitoring (ITMCFM) as part of its administrative and methodology INI coordination support.

Chairman of the Olympiad Organizing Committee, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko started the lesson with welcoming remarks and guidance. In her response, Rector of the University of Havana Dr. Miriam Nicado García thanked the organizers for the opportunity: “We are confident our team will be competitive. Our challenge is to compete on financial security with experts from across the world, and we are proud to learn from Russian experts!”

Fernando Camejo, Director General of FIU Cuba, promised to consider FIU probation plans for best performers.

As part of the financial security lesson, Deputy General Director of ITMCFM Irina Shilina described the current status of INI and Olympiad projects and explained why personal financial security is important, how to protect personal data, secure access to social media accounts, why fraudsters seek to take advantage of digital identities and how to avoid that. After her lecture, the contestants were presented with Olympiad assignments on economics, information security, law, and international relations. The top ten ranked students will be looking forward to the Olympiad finals in Sochi in October.
