Association of EAG FIU Press Services: a panel discussion on financial security media coverage

The Association of EAG FIU Press Services conducted a panel discussion ‘Financial security media coverage in the Eurasian region’ on the margins of the 42nd EAG Plenary in Moscow.

The panel, moderated by Irina Ryazanova, Head of Rosfinmonitoring Press Service, included media managers of the Belarus State Control Committee, Kazakhstan Agency for Financial Monitoring, and Intergovernmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA); representatives of ANO Dialog (Russia), ANO Natsionalnye Prioriteti (Russia), Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, International Training and Methodology Center for Financial Monitoring (Russia), and Inter-Olympiad Training Center for high-school students and undergraduates (Russia); and journalists.

Panelists addressed a broad audience of delegates from EAG members and observers, international organizations, media managers of Russian government authorities, experts, and academics from International Network AML/CFT Institute universities.

Addressing the panel and the audience, EAG Chairman and Rosfinmonitoring Director Yury Chikhanchin underscored the importance of having a media conversation in the region for better security, including ensuring the resilience of the broader public against threats from scams and fraud:

“We are addressing this topic for the first time in the EAG’s 20-year history. Developing new types of communications and getting media involved with financial intelligence units and other AML/CFT stakeholders have become prerequisites for ensuring adequate responses to the common challenges and threats. The Association of EAG FIU Press Services was created a year ago to achieve serious objectives: bringing the financial security agenda out to the broader public, enhancing trust in the AML/CFT systems in the region, and more,” he said.

The participants discussed, inter alia, effective communication tools, experiences of FIU public exposure, role to be played by journalists covering financial security, content relevant to the era of social networks, media trends, promotion and coverage of international initiatives, and combating fake news, sharing their best practices and projects.

Adopting the executive summary of the meeting, the participants expressed commitment to further enhancing their information cooperation to ensure financial security in the Eurasian region.
