On 15-16 April 2026, the International Training and Methodology Centre for Financial Monitoring organized an online seminar on countering current crypto threats for representatives of African countries. The event brought together more than 30 representatives of financial intelligence units and competent authorities from Egypt, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Ethiopia.
The first day focused on the evolution of international standards and national regulation. Participants received up-to-date information on the Financial Action Task Force’s approach to digital and crypto-assets. Daniil Burda, a representative of Rosfinmonitoring, reviewed the history of the FATF standard guidance on this topic, with special emphasis on adapting international requirements to the needs of national legal systems and interests of participating countries.
The second session turned to the legal regulation of crypto-assets in Russia. International expert Maria Agranovskaya explained the current status and pipeline of regulatory projects related to crypto-assets in the Russian Federation and answered follow-up questions.
The second day was fully dedicated to practical aspects. International experts Alexey Yurov and Dmitry Pigildin, together with Supreme Court Judge Denis Kunev, presented Russia’s practical experience and approaches to detecting and suppressing illegal transactions involving virtual assets.
The partners discussed technical aspects of analyzing virtual currency transactions on public blockchains, open-source intelligence, and modern methods of monitoring, tracing and labeling cryptocurrency transactions.
The final part examined a case related to illicit drug trafficking, showcasing real-world use of the Transparent Blockchain tool for transaction analysis. The practice-oriented session generated strong interest among the foreign audience.
